1. Choose Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen: Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Look for a minimum SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 30 for protection.
2. Apply Generously: Use enough sunscreen to cover all exposed skin, including your face, neck, ears, and any other areas not covered by clothing. Don’t forget commonly missed areas like the tops of your feet and the back of your neck.
3. Reapply Frequently: Sunscreen wears off over time, especially if you’re sweating or swimming. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more often if you’re sweating heavily or spending time in the water.
4. Water-Resistant Formulas: If you’ll be swimming or sweating, choose a water-resistant sunscreen. Remember, even water-resistant formulas need to be reapplied regularly, especially after towel-drying.
5. Seek Shade: Whenever possible, seek shade during peak sun hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. This can help reduce your overall sun exposure and minimize the need for excessive sunscreen application.
6. Protect Your Lips: Use a lip balm or lipstick with SPF to protect your lips from sun damage. Lips can easily become dry and cracked from sun exposure, so keeping them moisturized and protected is essential.
7. Wear Protective Clothing: In addition to sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, such as wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants, can provide extra protection from the sun’s harmful rays.
8. Don’t Forget Your Scalp: If you have thinning hair or a bald spot, apply sunscreen or wear a hat to protect your scalp from sunburn. Scalp sunburns can be particularly painful and difficult to treat
9. Check Expiration Dates: Sunscreen does expire, so be sure to check the expiration date before using it. Expired sunscreen may not provide adequate protection against UV rays.
10. Set a Reminder: Set a reminder on your phone or watch to reapply sunscreen regularly throughout the day. It’s easy to lose track of time, especially when you’re having fun in the sun!
