Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
The laser or light activates the Levulan. This leads to a mild sunburn-like reaction followed by peeling for 4 to 5 days. The treatment is also effective for precancerous actinic keratoses and acne. Non facial areas such as the chest, arms and hands can also be treated. This is used for the treatment of precancerous actinic keratoses and acne.
How Photodynamic Therapy Works
Actinic Keratoses: The activated Levulan penetrates into the skin to destroy the pre-cancerous lesions.
Acne: The activated Levulan penetrates into the skin to shrink oil glands and to destroy bacteria for the treatment and prevention of acne.
Frequency of Treatments
- 2-4 treatments
- Treatments are scheduled every 2-4 weeks apart depending on the condition being treated.
- Maintenance treatments are encouraged to maintain benefits. The frequency will vary from person to person and by condition (anywhere from 4 months – 2 years).
What to Expect:
- Pictures are taken the day of your first treatment for the purpose of monitoring progress.
- Paperwork- this includes consent forms and a brief medical history questionnaire.
- The skin will be prepped with an Acetone scrub.
- The Levulan is applied and allowed to penetrate the skin for 60-90 minutes.
- Depending on the light source used, a topical anesthetic cream may be applied for 30 minutes to reduce any discomfort.
