Recently, the American Board of Medical Specialties offered the first certification exam in Mohs Micrographic and Dermatologic Surgery. Drs Hoffman and Breithaupt are amongst the first Mohs Surgeons to become Board Certified in this discipline.
The skin cancer cells are carefully removed layer by layer and then transferred immediately to a pathology laboratory to check for abnormalities until no signs of cancer remain. This allows for the complete removal of non-melanoma skin cancer while minimizing the amount of tissue that needs to be removed.
Once the tumor is successfully treated, reconstruction of the skin can be performed to restore the normal structure and contour of the skin.
What to expect
Recovery may take 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the extent and depth of surgery. Mohs surgery is performed on commonly exposed areas of the skin where maintaining skin tissue is a priority, such as the face. After treatment, the treated area will show signs of the excision.
